Question.
What is a primary election?
Answer.
Voting in a primary election allows the Republican and Democratic parties to choose their candidates for the November election.
In Texas, primary elections are open.

This means any registered voter can vote.

  • Voters choose the Republican or the Democratic ballot for the primary.

  • You may only vote on that same party’s ballot in any runoff elections.

  • You can vote for any candidate, regardless of party, in November.

Question.
Why is there a primary runoff election?
  Answer.

Runoff elections are held when no candidate in an election wins more than 50% of the votes. The runoff ballots will have only the two candidates who received the most votes in the  primary election. In the primary runnoff election, voters decide which candidate you will see on the ballot in the General Election in November.

Question.
Who can vote in the primary runoff election?
  Answer.

The Democratic and Republican parties have primary runoff elections.

  • If you voted in the primary election, vote in the same party's primary runoff election
  • If you did not vote in the primary election, vote in either party’s primary runoff election.
  • If you participated in a caucus for the Libertarian or Green Party, do not vote in either primary runoff election. The Libertarian, Green, and other parties do not conduct primaries in Texas.
Question.
Do I have to vote on all the races on my ballot?

Answer.
Your ballot. Your choices.

  • You may vote in as many or as few races as you choose.
  • Every race you vote in helps determine  which candidate moves forward.
  • Plan ahead. The Voters Guide helps you vote with confidence.

Your voice matters. Make them listen.
