Volunteer Opportunities

The League of Women Voters Austin Area is an all-volunteer membership organization. You accomplish our mission:  Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.

Below is a description of all the current volunteer opportunities and the different ways you can contribute to our mission.
If any of these volunteer opportunities interest you or you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at We look forward to working with you!

Please note, some volunteer roles are open only to League members, while other volunteer roles are open to the community.

Voters Guide

VOTE411 Researchers: Volunteers are needed to collect candidate names, offices, and their contact info for the 2022 Primary Election. We expect to have many candidates for the redistricted elected offices and the first step is to find those candidates! That involves Internet digging, making phone calls, sending emails, and following up. You will be provided research strategies and suggested email, Facebook, and telephone scripts. If you have a few hours for a few weeks toward the end of this year, contact to sign up.

Assistant Editor: The assistant editor will work closely with the Voters Guide Director to produce a Voters Guide for every election. This position assists with all aspects of production, including question writing, candidate contact, scheduling, copyediting, proofreading, art editing, and general quality control. Publishing experience is preferred, but not required if candidate has good attention to detail. Proficiency in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese a plus! (open to League members)
Questions Committee: We are looking for new volunteers to join the committee that writes the questions we send to candidates. This committee meets 1-2 times via Zoom before each election. The next round of question writing will take place at the beginning of December, 2021. We would like to have input from a diverse variety of perspectives. (open to League members)

First Vote!

First Vote! Presenters: Become a First Vote! presenter ahead of the 2022 midterms. First Vote! is a voter education and registration program that’s active every semester in local high schools. Presenters are trained to give a First Vote! presentation to students in classrooms (both virtually and in-person). Volunteers can become a First Vote! presenter by watching this recorded training here and emailing Grace Thomas at Volunteers who have watched the training will be added to a list of presenters who will receive notices about sign-ups for upcoming school presentations. VDR certification is recommended but not required to be a presenter. For questions about the First Vote! program, contact Grace or Nicole Stump at (open to all volunteers)

Voter Registration

Volunteer Deputy Registrar: Are you a VDR? Do you want to help the League register voters? Fill out this form and you’ll be added to the list to be notified of upcoming events. If you’re not a VDR but would like to learn more about how to become one, check out this page. (open to all VDRs)

Lead VDR: Do you have experience with voter registration events? We are looking for Lead VDRs who can take responsibility for an individual event and work with the Voter Registration & Turnout Director to make sure that you have all of the materials and information you need for a successful event. If you’re interested in being an Event Lead, email (open to League Members)

Candidate Forums & Debates

Candidate Forums and Debate Volunteers: Part of our goal is to educate our members and the public on the issues we face in the voting booth. To assist with that goal, we need volunteers to moderate forums and debates throughout the year, as well as craft meaningful questions to pose to candidates during those events. Our League has worked tirelessly on a wide array of issues facing our local cities, ISDs, and counties. It’s time to create the next leadership team for 2022. Current chairperson, Carol Eckelkamp, will work side-by-side with those interested for a successful transition over the next election cycle in fall, 2022. (open to League members)

Policy Positions Committee

All advocacy done by the League is based on our carefully researched policy position statements which are then presented to members for consensus and finally voted on at our annual meeting in May.
