The town hall will begin with a 15-20 minute presentation from the city Budget Office, followed by a Q&A session. This is an opportunity for you to share your priorities for the city budget. Whatever issue that speaks to voters and compels them to use their vote as their voice is the energy that LWVUS must harness to effect lasting change, to dispel apathy, and to breathe new life into our democracy. The Democracy in Your Hands series, occurring through the summer and early fall, will outline how Leagues can activate and mobilize their communities in this rapidly changing political environment and make a lasting impact.

The short film Dying to Vote recalls the history of voting in the United States and centers on the story of Vernon Dahmer, a civil rights leader in Mississippi who was killed for trying to register African Americans to vote. The documentary Born in the Struggle looks at the lives of children born to 1960s and ’70s Black Power activists, including Ras J. Baraka, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Fred Hampton Jr., and explores how their parents’ revolutionary commitments shaped their childhoods and inspired their own activism. What is the scope of each branch of government and why does understanding these roles matter in the long run? Join LWVUS for a conversation that takes a deep dive into why it’s important for voters to understand the purview of the executive branch, judicial branch, and legislative branch of government. Panelists will discuss why the distinction between branches of government matters, the history behind the separation of powers, and how expanding your knowledge can inform and influence your work in your state or local League. Join us in commemorating the birthday of Oveta Culp Hobby. Oveta was the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, first Director of the Women‘s Army Corps, and a Chairperson of the Board of the Houston Post. Her husband, William Hobby, was the Texas Governor who signed the law allowing women in Texas to vote in a primary election.
